Medical science has once again performed a miracle at Doon Hospital in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Here, a complex heart surgery was successfully performed on a baby of just two months—that too without any incision. This surgery has become an example of the efficiency and dedication of the state’s government medical system.

Usman, a resident of Herbertpur, had come to Dehradun with his newborn son a month ago, when the child showed signs of fast breathing and unwellness. Pneumonia was confirmed in the examination and the doctors also advised to get the heart examined. Echo examination revealed that the child has a hole in his heart and there is also a severe narrowing of the aortic valve. This complex condition is called Severe Aortic Stenosis with PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) in medical language.

The child was brought to the OPD of the cardiology department of Doon Hospital, where after initial examination, the doctors said that surgery was required, but it was considered necessary to treat the pneumonia first. The child was treated under the supervision of pediatrician Dr. Tanvi Singh. When the child could not be freed from oxygen support despite efforts for several days, a decision was taken to perform surgery.

In this surgery that lasted for about an hour, the child’s constricted valve was opened with the help of balloon technique without making an incision. This process is called Balloon Aortic Valvotomy. Professor Dr. Atul Singh of the Department of Anesthesia played an important role in the operation.

Both heart diseases were complicating each other – Dr. Amar Upadhyay

Cardiologist Dr. Amar Upadhyay said that the child had two congenital problems in his heart, one of which was complicating the other. He said that first the situation was understood by taking blood samples from various chambers of the heart, and then carefully balloon aortic valvotomy was done. Dr. Upadhyay happily said that the operation was successful, the child is now healthy and will be discharged tomorrow.

This surgery is not only an achievement of the medical field, but it also proves that world-class treatment is possible even in government hospitals. All that is needed is a balance of dedication, expertise and technology. Young doctors like Dr. Richa, Dr. Sai Jeet, Dr. Asmita, Dr. Shoaib and Dr. Alfisha also made significant contributions to the team that carried out this complex procedure.
