US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor met with PM Modi on Saturday. During the meeting, he presented him with a signed photograph of US President Donald Trump. This meeting came amid strained relations between the two countries following the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on Indian exports. Gor is on a six-day visit to New Delhi with Deputy Secretary of Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas. Along with PM Modi, he also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Mishra.
PM Modi posted a photo of his meeting with Sergio Gor on social media. He wrote, “I am delighted to welcome US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor to India. I am confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”
Sergio Gor met with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval
US Ambassador Sergio Gor said that it was an honor and privilege for him to be in India. He said that he held important meetings with Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Mishra, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Referring to his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that the two leaders discussed bilateral issues such as defense, trade, and technology. Furthermore, discussions focused on the importance of critical minerals and their significance for both countries.
A Bright Future for India and the United States
Sergio Gor said, “The United States values its relationship with India. I wish both countries a bright future under the strong leadership of President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi.”
Modi and Trump spoke by phone
New US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said that President Donald Trump considers Prime Minister Narendra Modi a great and personal friend. Gor said that the two had a wonderful phone call just before leaving for Delhi. He said, “It is an honor for me to serve as President Trump’s ambassador to India. I look forward to further strengthening this important relationship and deepening cooperation between our two countries.”
US imposes 50 percent tariff on Indian goods
Relations between New Delhi and Washington have become significantly strained since US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods. This included a 25 percent tariff on the purchase of crude oil from Russia. India has called this move by the US “unfair and imprudent.” However, a recent phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Trump has raised hopes of a positive outcome in the ongoing trade deal negotiations.
