Giant forest found inside the sea, twice the area of India in size

Amazon, Borneo, Congo, Daintree. It is one of the largest and famous forests in the world. Have you ever heard of a forest under the sea? In many places in the world there are forests under the sea. Whose map has been made recently. If we see the size of all these forests, then they will come out twice the area of India.

There are also big forests. Boreal Forest extending from Russia to Canada. But do you know about how many forests are present under water. There are large Kelp and Seaweed forests inside the seas. Many times larger and denser than previously thought. A large variety of species of marine animals live inside them.

The Great African Seaforest lies below the coasts of South Africa and the Great Southern Reef near Australia. There are so many such forests inside the oceans of the world, which have no name. Nor does anyone recognize it. A new research has revealed how many such forests are there in the world. Their map has also been made. Which you will get to see here. This study has been published in the journal Global Ecology and Biogeography.

It has been told in this research that only the ground forests are not burning due to hot temperatures. Due to the high temperature even inside the sea, the forests are burning. Now you must be thinking that how can something burn inside water. But due to the rising temperature of the oceans, the ecology of these forests is deteriorating. Due to climate change, their ability to grow and absorb carbon is decreasing.

What are marine forests, what types of plants are there?

Marine forests are usually made up of seaweed. These are a type of algae. They grow by photosynthesis using the sun’s energy and carbon dioxide. If there is a good seaweed, then they can spread up to tens of meters in height. These forests spread over a large area. These forests move slowly with the waves of water. Just as many types of animals live in forests on land, similarly many species live in marine forests.

Sea bamboo and sea grass are also found in these marine forests. Sea bamboo is as long as the bamboo found on land. Whereas sea grasses are gas-filled shapes, which are like balloons. By spreading in the forest, they create a balance of gases, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Their stems are very strong, so that they can move towards the sunlight while tolerating the sea waves. As do the golden kelp spread across the Great Southern Reef of Australia.

How big are these forests and how fast do they spread

Seaweeds are fast spreading and growing plants. But till now it has not been ascertained how large the area is spread. The measurement of forests on the ground is done through satellites. But it is difficult under water. Because most satellites are not capable of mapping very much under the sea. Therefore, in this research, scientists explored the data of marine forests, sea shores etc. present around the world. Read research papers. View document. Checked local data for countries. Then it came to know that there are 60 to 72 lakh square kilometers of marine forest in the whole world. Which is bigger than Amazon.

What do these sea forests do, what is their work?

Our oceans absorb all the extreme heat from the 2400 gigatons of greenhouse gases produced on Earth. In such a situation, marine forests are facing a lot of problems. All these sea forests are burning. Like a fire in the forest on the ground. Not exactly like that but due to high temperature their condition is getting worse. The worst condition is in the marine forests of Western Australia, Eastern Canada and California.
