Government of India to host country’s first Internet Governance Forum

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Chairman, Coordination Committee of India Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2021, Anil Kumar Jain at a press conference at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi. The conference today announced the launch of India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) – 2021. The three-day IIGF-2021 will begin on October 20, 2021. The theme of this year’s meeting is Inclusive Internet for Digital India. The announcement made today marks the beginning of the Indian chapter of the United Nations based Internet Governance Forum. It is an Internet Governance Policy Deliberation Forum to bring together representatives of various groups to discuss public policy issues related to the Internet. This connectivity mode is cited as a multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance. This has been a key feature of the success of the Internet. The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) under the United Nations have adopted the diverse stakeholder concept well.

Commenting on this announcement, Anil Kumar Jain, Chairman, Coordination Committee, India Internet Governance Forum – 2021 (IGF) said that India, being the country with the second largest broadband subscription in the world, has the highest data per user per month. consuming country. Therefore, the aspirations of Indians should be reflected in the formulation of international policy and the consultations of stakeholders. The India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) is a remedial initiative for the country to ensure that the development of broadband is in line with the lifestyle and needs of the Indian community. IGF 2021 is organizing this event by adopting a multi-stakeholder concept in accordance with the true spirit of the global IGF. The Coordination Committee has appropriate representation from civil society, government, industry, industrial associations, trusts and other stakeholders.

Various pre-IIGF programs will start from August 2021. IIGF inaugural events will be organized as a precursor in many colleges and universities. This is being done to engage youth and students in the program to be held in October and to make the next generation a part of policy making.
