Importance of Crop Diversification for Resolving Water Crisis

Agriculture sector is a major user of water in the country.  The Crop Diversification Programme (CDP) implemented by Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) is mainly directed to diversify paddy area in the states of Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh.  Presently, the production of rice is surplus and the surplus production of rice is exported without affecting food security.  Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare launched CDP in 2013-14.  CDP is being implemented in the districts having more than 50 thousand hectare area under paddy crop in these states.  The major interventions under CDP are; alternate crop demonstrations, farm mechanization and value addition, site specific activities & contingency for awareness, training, implementation, monitoring etc.  Allocation of funds to states to divert paddy crop under CDP during last 5 years is as under:-

Year Allocation (Rs. in Lakhs)
2017-18 3323.00
2018-19 1328.00
2019-20 1328.00
