A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners will be made by the President on the advice of a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph, in a unanimous verdict, said the rule would remain in force till Parliament enacts a law on the issue.
Singhvi told reporters, “This decision has come after strong opposition from the government. We welcome it. This decision is going to have a wide impact. The government should implement this decision completely. ”He said that the same process should be adopted for the appointment of the director of ED. “Today the ED has become a brother of the government and a part of the alliance,” the Congress leader alleged.
