Pakistan can become a temporary member of UNSC, Panama is also expected to join

Elections are being held today for five temporary seats of the United Nations Security Council. Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia are expected to be elected to these seats. The 193-member United Nations General Assembly will elect five vacant seats through secret ballot. To win, these countries need a two-thirds majority i.e. 128 votes from the 193 countries.
The Security Council, an important unit of the United Nations responsible for international peace and security, has five permanent and ten temporary members.
The term ended on 31 December
Elections are being held for the five vacant seats of temporary members. The newly elected members will replace Japan, Mozambique, Ecuador, Malta and Switzerland. Their term ended on 31 December. The two-year term of the five new members will begin from 1 June. The General Assembly had elected Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia last year.
Slovenia won this seat by defeating Russia’s close ally Belarus by one vote in an interesting contest. However, this time no surprise is being created. On a regional basis, Somalia is the contender for the African seat, Pakistan for the Asia-Pacific seat, Panama for the Latin American and Caribbean seat and Denmark and Greece for the Western seat.
