NCW takes tough stand on Captain Anshuman’s comment against his wife, demands arrest and report from Delhi Police

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken seriously the ‘online’ indecent and insulting comments against the wife of Captain Anshuman Singh, who was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra. The Women’s Commission on Monday asked the Delhi Police to not only register a case against the accused but also take strict action. The accused in this case is a resident of Delhi.

The National Commission for Women has also mentioned special legal provisions in a letter issued to the Delhi Police on Monday. These include Section 79 of the Indian Justice Code (BNC) and Section 67 of the Information and Technology (IT) Act, 2000.

There is a provision of three years’ punishment in the BNC

The section of the Indian Justice Code (BNC) provides for punishment for an act done with the intention of hurting the dignity of a woman. While the said section of the IT Act deals with punishment for publishing or disseminating obscene material in electronic form.

The National Commission for Women, in its letter, has mentioned the punishment given under these laws and said that for these crimes, first-time offenders are liable to be imprisoned for up to three years and fined and for those who commit the crime again, there is a provision of more severe punishment.

Police should take action within three days

The NCW has asked the Delhi Police to immediately register an FIR against the said person and immediately arrest the accused. The commission has also demanded a fair and time-bound investigation of the matter from the police. It has also been asked to file an action report within three days.

Kirti Chakra winner Captain Anshuman Singh was part of the Army Medical Corps of the 26th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment. He was posted as a medical officer in Siachen during Operation Meghdoot. During the horrific fire accident in Chandan dropping zone of Siachen on 19 July 2023, Anshuman helped in evacuating the people trapped there. During this time the fire spread to the Medical Investigation Center. Seeing this, Captain Anshuman jumped into it without caring about his life.
