In addition, a video from the Chinese Foreign Ministry was posted on the Congress’s X account. In the video, ministry spokesperson Mao Ning says, “The Shaksgam Valley is Chinese territory, and building infrastructure there is not wrong.” The Congress asked,

“The Modi government’s foreign policy is on life support. Now China has claimed the Shaksgam Valley in Jammu and Kashmir as its own. What happened to Modi ji’s ‘red eyes’?”

Earlier, a delegation of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) had arrived at the BJP headquarters on Monday. On Tuesday, this same Chinese delegation also met with RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale and the head of the Congress’s foreign affairs department, Salman Khurshid.

January 12: China claims Shaksgam Valley in Jammu and Kashmir as its own

  • On the same day that a delegation from the Communist Party of China (CPC) met with BJP leaders, China claimed the Shaksgam Valley area of Jammu and Kashmir as its own territory.
  • China is building a road to Pakistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through this area. India has strongly objected to this.
  • India has consistently opposed any illegal foreign construction in this region. On January 9, India also termed China’s control over the area as an illegal occupation.
  • According to the Global Times, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the area in question is part of China.
  • She added that building infrastructure in its own territory is China’s right and cannot be questioned.
  • Pakistan illegally occupied the Shaksgam Valley in 1948 and ceded the territory to China in 1963.

What are the benefits of CPEC for China?

  • This corridor will facilitate easier access to crude oil for China. Currently, 80% of China’s imported crude oil travels from the Strait of Malacca to Shanghai.
  • This route is approximately 16,000 km long, but CPEC will reduce this distance by 5,000 km.
  • Through the economic corridor, China aims to gain a foothold in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.
  • With a naval base at Gwadar Port, China will also be able to use the port for the repair and maintenance of its fleet. Gwadar will prove to be very beneficial for China’s naval missions.

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar commented on the double standards of Western countries. He said, “Some countries sit far away and express concern about India-Pakistan tensions and offer unsolicited advice, but they ignore the violence happening in their own regions.”
