Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal has constituted a five-member committee to accelerate the ‘Save MGNREGA Campaign’ in the state. He also launched a scathing attack on the government, accusing it of changing the name of MGNREGA and eliminating employment opportunities in rural areas.

Ganesh Godiyal appointed MLA Vikram Singh Negi as the convener of the committee, with MLAs Manoj Tiwari, Virendra Jati, Adesh Chauhan, and DD Kuniyal as members. He said that the committee’s responsibility will be to organize public meetings (chaupals) at the panchayat level in their respective districts and to educate the public about the shortcomings of the changes made to MGNREGA. He stated that the UPA government introduced MGNREGA, which guaranteed employment, but after the changes made by the BJP government, the scheme has become a guarantee of not providing 60 days of employment.

Previously, the central government bore the entire cost, but now the intention behind shifting the burden to the state government is simply to gradually eliminate the scheme, as it will be impossible for the state government to raise the necessary budget. The Congress party had empowered villages through panchayats, allowing local people to play an active role in their own development, but now the government in Delhi will decide where roads and ponds will be built. The All India Congress Committee has also issued a letter regarding these restrictions, which will be read out at the public meetings and distributed to raise awareness among the people.

Reports of the public meetings held in each block and panchayat will be sent to the All India Congress Committee’s MGNREGA campaign control room through the PCC. He informed that under this program, on Wednesday, MLA Vikram Singh Negi from Pratapnagar constituency organized public meetings in 20 villages of Tehri district. During this time, the heads of four villages, inspired by this campaign, left the BJP and expressed their faith in the Congress party, joining its ranks. Ganesh Godiyal said that the convener, MLA Vikram Negi, and the four members are expected to play an active role in organizing this campaign through these public meetings.
